Illusion Drawings
1. Find an object or animal you would like to draw.

The object or animal must be 3D.
-
It must have a shadow under it.
-
You must show the top and side of the object or animal for the illusion to work
-
Draw from a photo or from life. Do NOT make it up. It must look real.

You can use graphite or color pencil.
2. Practice:
-
Draw 2 thumbnail sketches of your idea
-
Draw your final on a large sheet of paper.
Watch the videos for help and ideas.
Some of the artists use the anamorphic technique. This is where the drawing is stretched vertically so when viewed from the correct angle it has realistic proportions.
3. The final Drawing- Create Depth
Paper: 8.5"x11" (standard printer size)

First draw a trapezoid on your paper.

The sides should meet the corners of your paper

The top line should be just higher than the middle of the paper
-
The bottom line should be the bottom of the paper.
4. The final Drawing- Draw the Object or Animal
-
Draw your animal or object large and have it overlap the top line.
-
Remember: You must show the top and side of the animal for the illusion to work.

Draw every detail.
-
Draw a shadow.

5. The final Drawing- Cut It Out
-
Cut out the trapezoid and around the edges of your animal/object.

6. Take a Photo
-
You will need to be at the right angle to make it look like an illusion. Take lots of photos and choose the best ones to turn in for a grade.

You can use the camera on your laptop or your cell phone to take the photo.
